Hidden Bars and Nightlife:
1. The Old Man: Step into The Old Man, an unassuming speakeasy bar that’s renowned for its creative cocktails inspired by Ernest Hemingway. This hidden gem will transport you to a bygone era of classy cocktails and intimate conversations. It’s ranked 47th on Asia’s 50 Best Bars, definitely worth checking it out.
2.Feather Boa: It’s been a hidden gem since 1999 and it’s still going strong, an institution among locals in HK but there’s almost no information online. Hence, I’m here to give you an update and urge those who haven’t been to put it on their list for a visit to Soho Central. It’s small and quirky, but it holds its own against the newer spots in the area. There’s really nothing quite like it. Plus, they stick to the golden rule of doing a few things well instead of offering a huge selection at mediocre quality. Personally, I’m still a fan of their chocolate-rimmed strawberry frozen daiquiri.
3. Shady Acres: The cozy yet inviting setting consistently attracts a lively crowd that spills onto Peel Street, infusing it with a trendy and dynamic atmosphere. Shady Acres sets itself apart with its daily hard slushies, easily enjoyable affordable beers, recently introduced cocktail offerings, and an extensive selection of wines from around the globe, featuring biodynamic and natural options.
4. The Wise King: It’s ranked number 34th of the Top 50 Bars in Hong Kong. The Wise King has become a beloved establishment in Hong Kong, known for its distinct Iberian flair. Its name, paying homage to Alfonso X of Castile, a 13th-century Spanish monarch, is a nod to his decree that contributed to the tradition of serving tapas with alcoholic drinks in Spain. Enjoy the creative concoctions from head bartender Sandeep Kumar with a side of patatas bravas in the intimate space with plush velvet seats and golden Damask-style wallpaper.
5. Coa: From the day it opened, Coa bar in Hong Kong stood out as something special. It won awards and recognition right from the start. In fact, this year, it’s made history by becoming the number one bar in Asia for the third time – a first for any bar in the region. Coa gets its name from a tool used to harvest agave plants, which are essential for making drinks like mezcal and tequila. This bar is all about celebrating these spirits, and it has an impressive collection of 200 different agave-based drinks. The owner, Jay Khan, has personally visited all the distilleries that make these drinks, so when you order a drink here, you’re also getting a taste of his extensive knowledge and experience.
At Coa, a dimly lit, industrial-style bar, people come to enjoy unique drinks like mezcal and other agave-based spirits. They also serve special cocktails, like the La Paloma de Oaxaca, which has been on the menu since they opened. Another favourite is the Ancho Highball, which is a mix of tequila, salted plum, ancho chili, and guava soda, showcasing their love for Mexican flavours.
6. Le Boudoir: Imagine going to a place like Le Boudoir is a bit like taking a magical trip. You’ll find it underground, accessible via four grand red staircases. Inside, it’s decorated to look like the luxurious private rooms of wealthy ladies from 18th-century Europe, complete with fancy chandeliers. At Le Boudoir, they make a small but special menu of unique and stylish cocktails, making your visit feel like a journey into the past in a very elegant way.
7. Ping Pong 129 Gintoneria: Converting a former ping pong hall on the quiet streets of Sai Ying Pun into a trendy Spanish gin bar turned out to be a brilliant idea. Hipsters and creative types are drawn to spaces that have been transformed but still hold traces of their original look, combining a bit of rawness with style. This bar excels at showcasing Spain’s great gin scene, offering some of the country’s finest gin options and cocktails that go perfectly with the distinct flavors of each gin.
Don’t forget to book your spot in advance to find the speakeasy within the hotel, ensuring you access this exclusive space!
